Graham Chambers grew up playing the trombone and while at school was principal trombone of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and 1st trombone in the Morris Motors Band. At that time the Morris band was still a force to be reckoned with in the Championship section and was conducted by Harry Mortimer and Walter Hargreaves.
At Surrey University Graham studied trombone with Denis Wick and graduated with a B.Mus in 1977. Graham moved to London in 1979 and taught brass for a few years for Redbridge Borough as a peripatetic teacher, then joined BBC Radio 3 Music Department and later BBC TV Music and Arts.
He took on the Redbrige Band in 1984 during which time the band’s fortunes raised dramatically from being a middle ranking 2nd section band to London Area Championship Champions, twice qualifying for the National Finals. Graham left Redridge in 1990 with the band at its peak to work as librarian of the London Symphony Orchestra. The demands of this new job combined with worldwide travel made it impractical to continue conducting regularly.
