Becontree placed 11th at Open Mineworkers contest

Becontree Brass Band took part in the National Mineworkers Open Brassband Contest in Butlins this weekend, and were placed 11th out of 24 bands. The band scored 181 points, and are delighted with this achievement. The test piece - "The Plantagenets" by Edward Gregson - was not technically challenging, but rewarded musicality and ensemble playing, and the band's performance emphasized those areas.

The band felt that the work Graham Chambers, Musical Director, had undertaken with the band over the last months had paid off - the band played in a confident, relaxed manner, and there were many impressive personal contributions.

Kathryn Green's leadership as principal cornet player showed through, and Fiona Bell on tenor horn delivered an excellent, highly musical solo. Alan Flower's performance on solo euphonium was delicate and evocative, and Ewan Parker on soprano cornet was crisp, accurate and powerful.

The entire band played with a lot of enjoyment, and the players felt that the effort they'd put into rehearsing the test piece was amply rewarded. Graham Chamber's work with the band has paid off musically, and as a social event, the band felt Butlins was a real highlight. In this context, Nick Haslam deserves special credit - as a first time brass band contest participant, he showed great promise.
